Q. I have a Sony playstation 2 (SCPH-79004)
with board GH-062-02 and I want to modify it to play free games, boot on import, backups, ntsc, pal games. I read that there are a lot of (mod)chips available (e.g. Infinity 1.88) but I don't know the differences between them. Please can you explain me what kind of chips are available for my board and what are the differences between them. Can you also give me the price of this chip and the pictures how to install the chip on the board. Is the modification directly active when the chip is soldered on the board or must the chip be programmed / updated by myself (I expect that the FPGA is pogrammed)? Regards M. Swarzkopff

I tried some of my old ps1 backups on the Chipped PS2 with Modbo 4.0 and it keeps coming up 'please insert playstation or playstation 2 disc'It still comes up to the pink/red screen saying to insert disc. ;)
I know these work, as they do so in my modded PS1.

A.Your console has a different Laser than the PS1- different reading range- PS2 is known to read different brand of discs-
Also if there is scratch or fingerprint on discs you are making it hard for your console to read them-
Modbo Chips come with a Matrix Infinity 1.93 or 1.99 Infinity Manager - When turn on the console keep 'Circle' and 'Triangle' pressed down on the Sony Hand controller till the Infinity Manager displayes on the TV- now make sure you have the correct settings to play PS1 Games ( and Dual Layer DVD-9 Games while you are at it ) and check any other settings that you may wish to turn on or off.
Testing your console with PS2 and PS1 copied games works Fine - Try Using "Laser" brand CD ( you can get them everywhere )
The Best Brand CD for PSOne backups was Mitsui GOLD and Pioneer Blue - But these 2 Brands do not work as well on PS2 as the reflective surface is not optimum for the Playstation 2 Laser Calibration Reading Range.

Open tray, insert any PS2 Game, close tray, hold PS2 console reset button (Green lit Button) until PS2 powers off (Unit goes into standby mode and Small light turns red) then hit the PS2 console reset button once quickly to power on the unit and launch the game.
PS1 Games
Open tray, insert any PS1 Game, close tray, hold PS2 console reset button (Green lit Button) until PS2 powers off (Unit goes into standby mode and Small light turns red) then hold the PS2 console reset button about 2-3 seconds - or until the consoles eject button light turns blue- to launch the game.
DVD Movies
Open tray, insert DVD Movie, close tray, hold PS2 console reset button (Green lit Button) until PS2 powers off (Unit goes into standby mode and Small light turns red) then hold the PS2 console reset button about 2-3 seconds - or until the consoles eject button light turns blue- to launch the DVD.
To turn Modchip Off
When Console is in standby mode and Small light turns red power on the PS2 console by holding the reset button for 3-4 seconds to power on the unit and launch the game.

A.2 The answer is yes- you can get games from overseas as there is many more games released in Japan USA and Asia and sometimes Europe - after the mod chip is installed you can play games from all countries or regions.
To copy games from the Video Store can be done yes but this may breach copyright law in some countries- in Australia you can legally copy your own bought games that you own as a back up copy of the game disc but copying a game that you did not purchase may breach copyright.
Some clients also download games from torrent sites on the internet and when finished downloading they burn them onto DVD disc and play them if a modchip is installed in their console. This also may breach copyright if you did not own the original Game.

It is a well documented fact that the latest v9 and v10 & v12 slimline machines (SCPH50002 /SCPH70002 /SCPH75002) suffer from a major problem. The LA chip has a tendency to die. After it dies, the only solution to get your machine working again is to replace the chip with an original LA6508 or a device called LA6508 RII. However, in both cases, it is quite a hard soldering job. (much harder than to install a chip). The following can be done to reduce the chances of the LA 6508 chip dying.

Q. Why put a large Hard drive in my PS2 Game Console? A. More Space
PS2 Mod chips are a great way to play all the latest games released overseas on your locally purchased console. Many gamers enjoy the benefits of buying original Playstation 2 games from USA and Japan and Europe as there are many more games available & In Asian countries latest PS2 PAL & NTSC games are only $1.00 each. Some PSTwo games can also be downloaded from the internet and played on Free game servers.
Playstation 2 Larger Hard drives let you copy the entire game disc onto the hard drive so you can play the game without needing your Game disc inserted again - The perfect back up of your game - Just power up your PS2 console and select from the list of stored games to play. FAQS here.
Larger model Playstation 2 consoles can have a hard drive installed internally with just a Sony Network Adaptor. Games can be copied from The Playstation 2 straight onto Hard drive and Load times are much better off a larger PS2 Hard drive using HD Loader or HD Advance software. Slim PSTwo consoles can still use Hard drives using external USB connected Hard drives and USB Extreme Software but load times are slower as it only connects by USB1 and ps2 game compatibility is less.
