Gamecube System Specs :

At the Heart of the Stylish Cube beats a 485 MHz Main Processor but only uses a 200 MHz custom made video chip for graphics and has 40M Main System Ram which is less RAM than the XBox but more RAM than the Playstation 2. Although using very advanced technology the Gamecube cannot compete with the sheer power of the Xbox but is more technologically advanced than the more popular Playstation 2.

Gamecube Standard Features

  • Four game controller ports, as well as two Expansion ports for other peripherals, ranging from Modems and Future Expansion devices
  • A Top-loading Mini DVD tray - less likely for breakdowns as has less moving parts
  • A multisignal audio-video connector that allows for easy hookup to televisions and home theater systems but no S-Video output on Australian Models. Ohh why Nintendo !!
  • Allows connection between the Gamecube and Gameboy Advance via Link Cable
  • Proprietory Mini DVD Discs for very fast loading and streaming of Data
  • After the failure of Nintendo 64 game library to impress adult gamers -Gamecube Game Titles are better suited to all ages

Gamecube Durability Manufacture Quality & Design Drawbacks:

  • The Earliest Gamecube Consoles available in Australia have a high DVD Rom failure rate and are not good readers and can give inconsistent DVD Playback or make games stutter or freeze. Check Laser Repairs for more info.
  • Does not have a DVD Movie Player built in like other consoles.
  • Gamecubes have a fairly high Laser failure rate.
  • Must buy a Memory Card to save games as console does not have hard drive like Xbox
  • Must buy an extra an expensive adaptor to connect Gamecube to a TV for high quality picture output- but through these component AV cables High Definition output is achievable becasue the Gamecube is able to output very high resolution graphics..
  • Standard Australian PAL Consoles do not have SVHS or S-Video output so a conversion must be done to allow a user to connect the system to a SVideo connector on a TV to get better picture quality - USA and Japanese versions can use S-Video Standard.
  • Internal clean/ service of consoles years later to insure proper function - recommended.

GAMECUBE OVERALL

The most neatly packaged of the newer consoles but not taken seriously in Australia because of Nintendo Australia's lack of enthusiasm and marketing of this mini powerhouse console. Much better specs and ability than a Playstation 2 but not enjoying the success of its competition but still deserves a shared 3rd spot.

MOD CHIP

XenoGC Mod chip Versions:

Xeno GC Version:

it is impossible to tell the difference
in chip version until you install it in a gamecube
because they look the same on the outside.

Here is what I gather from forums about the versions:

    XenoGC Version 1.1 -

         - when you hold start while booting, the
screen shows BIOS v 1.01, but has NO MENU.

    XenoGC Version 1.5 - XenoGC Version 2.0

          - when you hold start while booting, the
menu says XenoGC Shell v 1.05, shows the
contents of the disc, and ALLOWS BOOTING
          MULTI-GAME DISCS.

Unfortunately the XenoGC is a simple drive chip, not upgradeable by DVD.
